WHAT IS A SNP DNA BUILD & WHAT DO I NEED TO SUBMIT?
A SNP build is a way of creating a DNA profile for an animal whereby a DNA sample cannot be procured. This is often the case when a sire or donor cow has deceased & no DNA sample (hair, tissue, semen) is available.
For a SNP build to occur, DNA samples need to be collected on a minimum of 10 progeny. DNA samples also need to be taken from their other living parent.
The more samples you can submit the stronger your SNP build will become.
All samples submitted will be SNP tested. The next step is to eliminate the DNA markers that the living parent passed to the progeny. What remains is the DNA markers that the sire has passed down to the progeny.
These markers are then used to create a DNA profile that reflects the sire. Collection method of samples remains the same (TSU/hair), which are then sent to your appropriate breed society. Ensure that you have discussed what you are doing with them, so they know a build is required.
Costs are the pricing for the SNP testing via your breed society, plus the additional cost of building the profile. For further information contact Neogen.
For example: the sire has died & no DNA sample is available for testing. To build his DNA profile, a DNA sample needs to be collected from 10 of his progeny AND the 10 dams. Total number of samples: 20.
All 20 samples are tested on a SNP test & confirmed to be the dams of the 10. These markers are then removed & what we are left with are the markers passed down to the progeny from the sire. Neogen then use these left over markers to generate the SNP build profile of the deceased sire, allowing the calves to be registered & sire verified.
